Princess-cut Diamond

Developed in the United States in 1980, the princess-cut diamond is square with 90-degree-angled corners. Very little rough weight is lost in the polishing of this cut. In fact, almost 62 percent of the rough is retained. Because of the method of polishing, inclusions are more difficult to see in the princess than in any other square-cut. The square shape of the fiery princess is equally appealing in traditional, retro, or contemporary settings.

The Princess cut generally has either 50 facets (21 crown, 4 girdle, 25 pavilion) or 58 facets (21 crown, 4 girdle, 33 pavilion), depending on how the pavilion is cut. The optimal ratio of length to width is 1:1, although a length-to-width ratio between 1:1 and 1.4:1 is perfectly acceptable.

When choosing a princess-cut diamond you should avoid cuts that are notably flat or excessively deep. It is important to note if the sides are even and watch out for a thin or very thin girdle.
