Round Diamond (Brilliant Round-Cut)

The brilliant round-cut was a dramatic improvement on its direct predecessor, the Old European-cut. Though first proposed in the late 1800s, the brilliant round-cut gained a foothold in 1919, when Marcel Tolkowsky published a thesis which describes the ideal proportions and techniques for creating the shape. The brilliant round-cut has evolved little since then, and Tolkowsky's methods are still in wide use.

The modern round brilliant consists of 58 facets (or 57 if the culet is excluded); 33 on the crown (the top half above the middle or girdle of the stone) and 25 on the pavilion (the lower half below the girdle).
