0.50 - 0.74 Carat Diamonds

The carat is the unit of measurement for a diamond's weight. Larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable than smaller ones when all other characteristics are of equal quality. At Brilliance, we offer certified diamonds ranging in carat weight from 0.25 to 10 carats to ensure the largest selection. A 0.50 – 0.74 carat certified diamond is a classic choice for a diamond engagement ring.

Diamond Carat Weight

The weight of a loose diamond is measured in carats. When comparing a diamond carat to the metric system, one carat is equal to 0.2 grams or 0.007 ounces. The carat weight of a certified diamond will be indicated on its grading report and will be rounded to the nearest hundredth.

Carat Weight and Price

One million rough diamonds must be mined in order to produce a high-quality one-carat loose diamond, as most diamonds are too small or too inferior in quality for fine jewelry. Therefore, certified diamonds with larger carat weights will demand significantly higher prices than smaller diamonds. For example, a one-carat loose diamond may cost four to six times as much as a half-carat diamond.

Carat Weight and Diamond Quality

When selecting a diamond, it is important to consider both carat size and quality.

Before choosing your carat weight, consider the following points:
  • When factors like cut and color are equal, a certified diamond that weighs a little less than one carat will be noticeably less expensive that a diamond that weighs exactly one carat because diamond pricing is determined by carat weight and broken down in half-carat increments.
  • The size of a diamond is not only determined by its carat weight, but also by its length and width measurements. These measurements, described in millimeters, indicate how large the loose diamond will appear when viewed from above. A one-carat diamond with a diameter of 5.9 mm will appear smaller than a one-carat diamond with a diameter of 6.5 mm.
  • As its carat weight increases, the price of a diamond will rise as well. If carat weight is the deciding factor in your search, look for a diamond with a Slightly Included (SI1-SI3) clarity rating and a Near Colorless (G-J) color rating.
  • Certain diamond shapes, like an oval or a marquise, are optimally cut at lower depths, resulting in larger length and width measurements per carat when compared to deeper shapes like rounds or princesses.
  • The ring size of the wearer should also be taken into account when choosing a carat weight. A one-carat diamond will look larger on a finger with a ring size of 5 than it would on a larger finger.
  • Certain ring setting may restrict you to a particular shape or carat weight range. If you have already chosen a ring setting, make sure that the diamond you chose is compatible with that setting.
