EGL Certified Diamonds
Brilliance relies on highly regarded gemological laboratories such as the EGL (European Gemological Laboratory) to certify every loose diamond we offer. The EGL uses universally recognized standards for grading diamonds. An EGL certificate is a valued document that aids consumers in the diamond buying process and is the result of thorough scrutiny of a diamond.

Certified Diamonds
A diamond certificate is an easily understood document prepared by an expert gemologist that describes the key characteristics of a certified diamond. A certificate from a gemological laboratory such as the EGL verifies the quality of a loose diamond and allows non-experts to make educated buying decisions.
The European Gemological Laboratory (EGL)
The European Gemological Laboratory (EGL) was founded in Belgium more than 30 years ago. The EGL is committed to protecting the integrity of the jewelry trade and fueling public interest through applied science, innovation, education, and exceptional service.
The EGL is accredited with introducing new approaches to loose diamond grading, the practice of certifying diamonds measuring less than one carat, and establishing the ‘SI3’ designation for diamond clarity. The organization is also recognized for conducting advanced research with renowned physicists, geologists, and mineralogists.
Before grading a diamond, the EGL thoroughly scrutinizes every facet and detail of the stone. All EGL certified diamonds are inspected by at least eight expert gemologists. If the judgment of a diamond is not unanimous, senior gemologists further analyze the stone before a grade is assigned.
Carat weight is measured using calibrated electronic scales. The diamond’s proportions, measurements, and facet angles are recorded. Then, the diamond’s color is assessed by a specialized team of gemologists by comparing it to master stones of predetermined color. Specially calibrated lighting is used to illuminate the diamond during analysis. The clarity of a stone is determined by a specialized team of experienced gemologists. Each gemologist independently examines the diamond using a microscope with a minimum of 60x magnification to identify characteristics of clarity and finish. If any inclusions are detected, they are plotted on a diamond diagram. Polish and symmetry are evaluated based on a careful inspection of the quality of a loose diamond’s finish and cut. Last, the diamond is exposed to long-wave ultraviolet radiation to check for the presence of any amount of fluorescence.
The EGL Diamond Grading Report includes the color, clarity, carat weight, and cut of a certified diamond. A detailed diagram is used to plot the loose diamond’s proportions and to show any inclusions that are discovered.
An EGL Diamond Consultation includes the information noted on the Grading Report, including shape, carat weight, color, clarity, and measurements, as well as a plotting diagram, in a convenient, pocket-sized document.
