Loose Diamonds and the Engagement Ring

The name "diamond" is derived from the Greek root "adamas", meaning invincible or indestructible. The arrangement of carbon molecules that form a diamond creates one of the most durable and rare gemstones found in nature. In fact, high-quality loose diamonds are so rare and valuable that one million diamonds must be mined in order to produce a single one-carat polished diamond.

Diamonds are prized above all other precious gems not only for their sparkle and beauty, but because they are an everlasting symbol of love, commitment, and romance. Almost 80% of engagement rings feature a diamond center stone, making them very sought after and valuable. Receiving a certified diamond in an engagement ring or diamond ring is one of the most exciting experiences for a bride-to-be or a significant other. It is recommended to invest in a high-quality loose diamond, as it will generally hold its value and can be set into various settings as styles and tastes change.

Certified Loose Diamonds

The term "loose diamond" refers to a diamond that has not yet been set into a diamond ring or engagement ring setting. Most high quality diamonds greater than a 0.25 carat go through a certification process to determine their characteristics. The loose diamond is evaluated by a group of independent expert gemologists from a gemological laboratory using specialized scales and microscopes. The gemologists render a scientific judgment of the quality of the diamond - its color, clarity, polish, and symmetry – and document it on a grading report or certificate. Also included on the report are the basic specifications about the diamond, such as its carat weight, shape and cutting style, measurements, proportions, and fluorescence.

The benefit of purchasing a loose diamond that has been certified is that the consumer is assured of the quality of the product; there is no need to blindly trust the seller or rely on one's own limited knowledge. Every loose diamond from Brilliance is accompanied by a certificate from one of the five most trusted independent gemology labs – the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the American Gem Society (AGS), the European Gemological Laboratory (EGL), the International Gemological Institute (IGI), or the Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD). These institutes are known for their unbiased and consistent approach to diamond grading and the reports they issue are highly regarded.

Grading Loose Diamonds

Although the grading scales for each gemological laboratory vary slightly from one to another, the GIA has set forth industry accepted standards for the most significant diamond characteristics. Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow), with colorless diamonds being the most desirable. Clarity is graded in loose diamonds on a scale from FL (Flawless) to I3 (Included) and is based on the number, size, color, and location of included characteristics in the stone.

A loose diamond's cut is the only graded characteristic not determined by nature, but by the craftsmanship and skill of the diamond cutter. A well-cut diamond emits high levels of brilliance, fire, and scintillation based on the quality of its proportions and its polish and symmetry. Polish is determined by the finish of the exterior of the diamond and is graded from Excellent to Poor. Symmetry is graded on the same scale and is based on the number and alignment of the diamond's facets. Cut grade, also graded from Excellent to Poor, is an overall assessment of the diamond's light reflecting properties and its visual appeal.
